VEGFA and type 1 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional study of 21 healthy subjects and 64 patients with type 1 diabetes determined VEGF levels in plasma collected in both citrate and PECT (a medium that inactivates platelets) found that higher levels of VEGF in citrate plasma samples of diabetic patients do not represent the real situation in vivo but mainly originate from higher artificial ex vivo release from platelets (38).
