Impaired mitophagy has been observed in both rat and mouse models of glaucoma with decreased levels of the lysosome-associated membrane protein 1 (LAMP1) and increased mitophagosome formation, indicating that the mitochondria are not being recycled efficiently by the lysosomes (Coughlin et al., 2015; Dai et al., 2018; Ju et al., 2022). This evidence concerns the gene LAMP1 and glaucoma.
