These authors demonstrated that one-week after the injection of streptozotocin (STZ), which destroys beta-cells in the islets of Langerhans to produce insulin deficiency, rodents exhibited hyperglycemia but normal epidermal AQP3 levels; however, two weeks after STZ administration, and despite similar blood glucose levels as at one-week post-STZ, AQP3 protein expression in the epidermis decreased [33].
