Recent studies clearly showed that several new biomarkers for acute appendicitis, such as hyperbilirubinemia, hyponatremia, hyperfibrinogenemia, pentraxin-3, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) or interleukin-6, showed good sensitivity and specificity for the detection of acute appendicitis. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is appendicitis.
