Gal-3 is a key mediator of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), a central mediator of fibrogenesis, through which Gal-3 plays an important role in the fibrosis in numerous organs, such as liver,251 kidney,252 and lungs.253,254 Gal-3 is thus involved in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and cirrhosis. This evidence concerns the gene TGFB1 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
