Importantly, macrophages have been definitively proven to contribute to NASH, as depleting Kupffer cells from mice using liposomal clodronate, deleting the chemokine receptor C-C chemokine receptor type 2 (CCR2), or ablating bone marrow cells from mice using irradiation, mitigates the progression of steatosis to NASH (59–62). The gene discussed is CCR2; the disease is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
