However, it is worth mentioning a few clinical studies (reviewed recently by Gareri et al. [58]) which indicated that treatment of patients suffering from early Alzheimer’s disease or mixed dementia with citicoline combined with memantine and/or an AChE inhibitor resulted in slight but statistically significant improvement, whereas treatment with memantine and/or an AChEI, drugs formally indicated for the early dementias, resulted is a slight but statistically significant worsening of MMSE scores at 3 or 9 months.
