ZUP1 and neurodegenerative disease: Given that one of the main functions of ubiquitination is to promote protein degradation, as well as bridging the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) to autophagy and mitophagy, specific DUB down-regulation can presumably enhance protein degradation, autophagy and basal mitophagy and be beneficial in neurodegenerative diseases in which accumulation of misfolded proteins and aberrant mitochondria is implicated.
