ACE2 and cystic fibrosis: Using primary HBE cells, a major source of ACE-2 expression in the airway, we demonstrate for the first time that NE, abundant in the CF airways, catalyzed ACE-2 cleavage by proteolytic shedding and that loss of the putative ACE-2 N-terminal spike binding domain on the surface of HBE was associated with decreased SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binding.
