Interestingly, targeting another phosphatidylserine receptor, MerTK, which is in the same pathway (efferocytosis) as Tim-4, in these macrophages increases anti-tumor immunity (96), suggesting that targeting the efferocytosis pathway in resident peritoneal macrophages holds a great promise in treating intraperitoneal metastasis of ovarian cancer. The gene discussed is TIMD4; the disease is ovarian carcinoma.
