A subsequent study using ayu macrophages showed that the endogenous antimicrobial peptide, cathelicidin, induced chemotaxis, the synthesis of mRNA transcripts coding for IL-1β, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor, oxidative bursts, phagocytosis, and V. anguillarum killing in a P2X7-dependent manner [315], supporting interactions between antimicrobial peptides and P2X7 observed in mice and humans in other infection types [316].
