In our previous research, the expression levels of pro-oxidant (malondialdehyde: MDA; 4-hydroxynonenal: 4HNE), pro-inflammatory (interleukins: (IL) IL1β, IL6; tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α), pro-angiogenic (vascular endothelial growth factor: VEGF), and pro-apoptotic [caspase 3: CAS3; poly adenyl ribose polymerase (PARP) 1] proteins increased to hazardous levels, whereas the levels of antioxidants (superoxide dismutase: SOD; catalase: CAT; total antioxidant capacity: TAC) decreased in DM2 patients with NPDR and PDR [41,42,43,44,46,47].
