Cheng et al. used immunohistochemistry to identify the expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), a critical enzyme for acetylcholine synthesis, in surgical specimens of normal colons and colon cancer and found that normal colon enterocytes showed limited to no ChAT staining, whereas one-half of the colon cancer specimens displayed moderate to strong staining, and the other half exhibited weak staining [22]. The gene discussed is CHAT; the disease is colonic neoplasm.
