In in vitro experiments on B16F10 mouse melanoma cells, esculetin at a concentration of 50 μM was observed to be an inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways (related to arachidonic acid metabolism), rendering the cells non-invasive by reducing the production of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2), an enzyme required for membrane degradation.
