GAD2 and type 1 diabetes mellitus: In relation with T1DM, Kaufman and coworkers (1992) first reported that the nonstructural protein P2C of coxsackievirus B, which appears to form part of the membrane-bound replication complex, shared a remarkable sequence similarity—an identical six-amino-acid sequence (PEVKEK) and several other conserved substitutions—with GAD65 and proposed that this is a mechanism by which this virus triggers T1DM.
