ASPG and neoplasm: Theenzyme E. colil-asparaginase( l-asparaginase amidohydrolase, EC 3.5.1.1) is an FDA-approveddrug for the treatment of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia.1 In addition, the drug has demonstrated activityagainst acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphosarcoma non-Hodgkin’slymphoma.2,3 Recently, the drug has been shown to retardthe metastasis of breast cancer tissue as well.4 The mechanism of drug action relies on the enzymatic conversionof asparagine to aspartate, thereby depleting the pool of bioavailableasparagine in serum for the tumor cells.
