Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been shown to reduce liver fat content (assessed using MRI techniques) but without convincing evidence of histological improvement in NAFLD and, therefore, may be a less favourable option for influencing liver disease in patients with NAFLD who have coexistent T2DM36. This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
