Likewise, the deletion of autophagy-related ATG5 or ATG7 in hypothalamic POMC neurons is found to trigger abnormal glycolipid metabolism and severe obesity in the ATG5-or ATG7-deficient mice (Coupe et al., 2012; Kaushik et al., 2012; Malhotra et al., 2015), suggesting the involvement of ER-phagy in the degradation of misfolded POMC. Here, ATG7 is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
