A study that investigated Notch signalling in the context of rhinovirus-induced goblet cell hyperplasia in COPD using differentiated human airways cultures found that inhibiting Notch3 but not Notch1, by short hairpin RNA specific to Notch3 or Notch1 lentivectors, attenuated goblet cell hyperplasia, reducing goblet cell numbers [78]. The gene discussed is NOTCH1; the disease is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
