β-Lap has antitumor effects in a broad spectrumof cancer cells with high expression of NQO1, including breast,31 non-small-cell lung,32 pancreatic,32 prostate,33 colorectal,34 liver,35 and ovarian.36 Inthese cancers, β-Lap undergoes a redox cycle, which resultsin the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent celldeath.37,38 NQO1 reduces β-Lap to its hydroquinoneform that undergoes a two-step spontaneous oxidation process to reformβ-Lap, perpetuating the redox cycle. Here, NQO1 is linked to cancer.
