ACE2 and COVID-19: The early surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases was dominated by the rise in the prevalence of strains containing spike mutations, e.g., D614G and N501Y, which improved viral transmission by increasing the spike’s affinity for human angiotensin, converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), the primary receptor for SARS-CoV-2 [1,2].
