Three potential pathogenic mechanisms are widely recognized: (a) SARS-CoV-2 directly damages cardiomyocytes through ACE2 receptors expressed in the heart [18], (b) COVID-19-induced cytokine storm leads to cardiomyocyte hypoxia and apoptosis [19,20], and (c) COVID-19 causes interferon-mediated systemic inflammation that damages cardiomyocytes [13,21].
