HIF1α is a key transcription factor adapted to the hypoxic state that upregulates a series of genes related to glycolyticmetabolism and contributes to the development of the Warburg effect in tumor cells [37].Our findings indicated that HIF1α activation enabled normal GC cells to survive in hypoxic environments, while GC cells lacking SHMT2exhibited increased apoptosis, redox imbalance, cell cycle arrest, and reduced the glycolytic capacity in the absence of oxygen.
