A recent study performed in primary human conjunctival epithelial cells (PECs) obtained from primary SS patients identified significant differences in miR-744-5p expression at the ocular surface between pSS patients and healthy controls, and that this miRNA targets mRNA of Pellino3 (PELI3), a factor participating in regulating innate immune response through its interaction with RAK1, TRAF6, and transforming growth factor-β activated kinase 1 (TAK1). Here, PELI3 is linked to synovial sarcoma.
