STAT3 and ischemic stroke: Because I/R injury promotes the secretion of IL-6, which induces phosphorylation of STAT3 and blocks the level of FPN1 protein [11], accumulated iron causes lipid peroxidation, which damages the cellular membrane [57], upregulates toxic ROS accumulation, such as iNOS [58,59] and increases lethal lipid peroxides, such as 4-HNE and MDA, in an ischemic stroke mouse model [40,41,60,61,62].
