ELN and pulmonary emphysema: As myofibroblasts induce secondary septation by depositing ECM proteins, particularly elastin, at the tips of developing secondary septa (Dabovic et al., 2015), and loss of elastin is a key feature of emphysema (Ito et al., 2019; Suki et al., 2012), these data suggest that mesenchymal Gαq/11-induced myofibroblast differentiation and function are required for alveolar development and homeostasis.
