SLC5A2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: Sodium-glucose cotransport protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, originally developed as glucose-lowering agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), can decrease the risk of death and other adverse outcomes in patients with chronic HF and reduced ejection fraction (i.e., left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40%), or chronic kidney disease, despite the presence of T2DM.
