Altogether it seems that reticulocytes isolated from haemochromatosis patient blood remains more invasive to P. vivax infection compared to other blood sources, possibly because of the abundance of iron and more number of CD71+ reticulocytes in haemochromatosis blood (Conrad et al., 1962; Gildersleeve et al., 1985; Feeney et al., 2005). This evidence concerns the gene TFRC and hereditary hemochromatosis.
