TARDBP and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: It is interesting to note that neuronal inclusions are composed of ubiquitinated and phosphorylated aggregates of truncated TDP-43 C-terminal fragments of size ∼25–35 kDa (e.g., TDP-25 and TDP-35), formed by aberrant cleavage events and shown to be highly cytotoxic and contribute to ALS (Neumann et al., 2006; Zhang et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2009).
