Studies demonstrated in experimental models and in CKD patients a lower megalin expression in the kidneys (Toi et al., 2019; Wen et al., 2022) and the absence of megalin in mice causes the inability of PTECs to capture the 25(OH)D3-VDBP complex, which in turn, are excreted in the urine, leading to a drastic reduction of plasma level of 25(OH)D3 and 1,25D3 (Nykjaer et al., 1999; Negri, 2006). Here, LRP2 is linked to chronic kidney disease.
