Indeed, in the field of alcoholic hepatitis, another LT indication in which the MELD score and its temporal changes have a predictive value [40,41,42], it has been reported that: (a) the activity of aldose reductase, the only enzyme that produces endogenous fructose, and the metabolites of this enzyme, fructose and uric acid, are higher in the livers of patients with this disease than in healthy livers; and (b) aldose reductase activity and serum uric acid concentration correlate positively with hepatocyte damage and the severity of alcoholic hepatitis [43].
