In view of evidence that cytokine (e.g., IL-6) levels appear to be inversely correlated with hippocampal volume [30,31], it has been hypothesized that IL-6 may potentiate memory impairment, playing a possible pathogenic role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular dementia, and age-related cognitive decline [32,33].
