Another consequence of dysregulation of NEKs is illustrated in a study by Kenna et al., where there was a significant correlation in variant forms of NEK1 and the development of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), an autoimmune disease where there is selective degeneration of corticospinal tracts leading to paralysis and ultimately respiratory failure [6]. The gene discussed is NEK1; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
