Considering the expression pattern of ECRG4/augurin in several tissues under physiological conditions and its alterations in disease, the novel role of augurin as a canonical Wnt signaling inhibitor might underpin many of its described effects on cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth [23, 25], cell senescence [16], stem cell renewal [3, 17], and inflammation/response to tissue injury [20, 21].
