In addition to atherosclerosis, high-fat diet fed ApoE-/- mice have been shown to be a model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with hepatic fibrosis, a condition which is associated with an increased risk of postoperative death following major surgery in humans (Zarzavadjian Le Bian et al., 2012; Schierwagen et al., 2015). The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is atherosclerosis.
