Neutrophils can increase stroke severity through a variety of mechanisms such as triggering capillary sludge, producing free radicals, secreting inflammatory mediators, enhancing thrombosis by forming neutrophil–platelet aggregates and NETs and up-regulating nuclear PKM2 (Aronowski and Roy-O’Reilly, 2019; Denorme et al., 2022; Dhanesha et al., 2022). This evidence concerns the gene PKM and stroke disorder.
