Taking advantage of the well-described association between meningiomas and somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2), 68Ga-DOTATATE uses an SSTR2 analog to enable distinguishment of postoperative and postradiation changes from meningioma tumor tissue.34–37 In 2015, Rachinger et al. demonstrated that 68Ga-DOTATATE PET imaging had a significantly higher sensitivity than the gold standard of contrast-enhanced MRI (CE-MRI) in detecting primary and recurrent meningioma tissue, regardless of WHO grade.34 This evidence concerns the gene SSTR2 and meningioma.
