The drug alters the conformation of the ACE2 receptor via AMP kinase, which potentially inhibits SARS-CoV-2 entry into cells, decreases viral replication by increasing endosomal pH, decreases systemic inflammation via reductions in NETosis and serum IL-6 and TNF-α levels, decreases thrombosis by inhibiting platelet activation factor and through the aforementioned effect on NETs, and resolves lung inflammation with less pulmonary fibrosis through its effect on local expression of TGF-β and vascular endothelial growth factor [64].
