IDD is characterized by the early onset of a severe inflammatory environment both within the degenerating IVD and in the peridiscal space, followed by the production and secretion of pro-inflammatory factors (e.g., cytokines) such as interleukin 1b (IL-1b), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) (Takahashi et al., 1996; Shamji et al., 2010). This evidence concerns the gene TNF and intervertebral disk degenerative disorder.
