Besides anthocyanins, ellagitannins, and their gut microbiota-derived metabolites, other important bioactive molecules found in blueberries were shown to trigger autophagy in human colorectal cancer cells and to induce apoptosis by increasing the expression of proapoptotic proteins p21 and p53 and decreasing the anti-apoptotic protein expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2). The gene discussed is BCL2; the disease is colorectal cancer.
