KLF2 has been shown to promote the expression of genes involved in cholesterol efflux, such as ATP binding cassette subfamily A member 1 (ABCA1) and ATP binding cassette subfamily G member 1 (ABCG1), which help remove excess cholesterol from macrophages and prevent the formation of foam cells, a hallmark of atherosclerosis. Here, KLF2 is linked to atherosclerosis.
