MMP14 and neoplasm: Since the CT orchestrates many of these mechanisms, its deletion has been observed to lead to the loss of the MT1-MMP-induced proteolysis-independent promotion of migration [35,59,66,102,111], gelatine degradation [26,139], invasion into the matrix (while proteolytic activity stayed unaffected) [59], and even a significant decrease in capacity for tumor development in xenograft models [66].
