Epilepsy in these children caused a decrease in the plasmatic activity of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT), and an increase in glutathione peroxidase (GPx), as well as an increase in the oxidant markers malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and 3 nitrotyrosine (3-NT) over one year of treatment. This evidence concerns the gene CAT and epilepsy.
