Previous studies in many cell types reported that the TAGE–RAGE axis promoted the production of ROS through the activation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-reduced oxidase (NOX), the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and the generation of inflammatory cytokines [24,25,69,70], and thus, has been implicated in not only the onset, but also the progression of NAFLD/NASH. This evidence concerns the gene VEGFA and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
