Clinical studies have shown that MT1A and MT2A levels are upregulated in subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissues of patients with obesity or type 2 diabetes [49,50], implying that increased expression of MTs in human adipose tissues may be either a factor contributing to the development of obesity or a consequence of obesity. The gene discussed is TIMM8A; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
