In fact, a subset of neurodegenerative diseases known as tauopathies, are associated with the accumulation of tau without amyloid accumulation, with mutations within the MAPT gene leading to familial forms of tauopathy (Hutton et al., 1998; Poorkaj et al., 1998; Spillantini et al., 1998; Kovacs, 2015; Orr et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and neurodegenerative disease.
