SGK1 is best known for its role in the kidney where it regulates surface expression of the epithelial sodium channel52 and activity of the renal outer medullary potassium channel.53 Mice lacking renal SGK1 have a salt-wasting phenotype,54 and SGK1−/− mice are unable to appropriately excrete K+ in response to a K+ load.55 However, in addition to its effects in kidney tubule cells, there are emerging data that SGK1 in T cells independently promotes hypertension and hypertensive end-organ damage.
