Since adipose cells express ACE2 – the major cell entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2 (301) – and virus replication and its inflammatory insult are favored by the presence of lipid droplets (302), the hypothesis that ATs may serve as reservoir for storing and replicating the virus, as well as a site for cytokine amplification, has emerged as a potential explanation for the strong association between obesity, aging and COVID-19 severity (303, 304). Here, ACE2 is linked to COVID-19.
