Notably, a significant decrease in zinc content in pancreatic tissues from various genetic mouse models of type 2 diabetes in the early stage of the disease, such as db/db mice (having a mutation in the leptin receptor) and ob/ob mice (having a mutation in the leptin gene) have been reported29,30, suggesting that the decrease in zinc is not dependent only on hIAPP expression. The gene discussed is LEP; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
