Activated caspase-1 cleaves GSDMD and generates an active N-terminal cleaving product (GSDMD-NT), which translocates to the plasma membrane and oligomerizes to form a pore that allows the release of IL-1β and IL-18, subsequently inducing pyroptotic cell death and promoting the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis (61). Here, GSDMD is linked to atherosclerosis.
